Emma Girdlestone Smith Ridges was born March 31, 1835 in Barford, Norfolk, England. She later traveled to the United States with her parents Thomas and Mary Betts Girdlestone with the Willie Handcart Company. Both Thomas and Mary died on the trail, but Emma survived much in part to her parents having her sleep between them. Emma married twice, first to Joseph Ridges and then to my great-great-grandfather Ralph Smith.
