Metrosphere 1994 cover

Metropolitan State University printed a literary magazine called "Metrosphere" when I attended during the 1990s.

My poem "This is Ridiculous" managed to get into the 1991-1992, 10th anniversary edition of the magazine.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

When I was attending Metropolitan State College, now University during the 1990's, I took a creative writing class that I greatly enjoyed.

One section of the class involved poetry, which I absolutely hated. Our professor asked us to take several words out of the dictionary and create a poem.

Because I was paying for the class and because I was no longer in jr. high school, I decided I would write a poem about how much I hated poetry. I failed to follow the instructions.

I wrote the poem in about five minutes, turned it in without a title and on a half a sheet of paper - it was as if I WAS still in jr. high school.

I didn't think much of it until the next class when our professor, Dr. Meghan McClard, handed everybody a sheet of paper with her favorite poems on it.

I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw that my poem about my deep hatred of poetry was one of her favorites.

I looked up at her and she was looking right back at me, smiled and said "It's very good."

It as theeeeeeeee funniest thing - and RIDICULOUS that ever happened to me.

I later submitted it in the school's literary magazine "Metrosphere." I didn't know it had been accepted until I just happened to pick up a copy of the magazine and saw my poem!  Once again, I nearly died!

That one class - that one class - changed my life in so many ways and launched my creative writing career.

Enjoy!

THIS IS RIDICULOUSi!

s a popular choice on business and tech sites. It's also a good ASiI have never liked reading poetry

                 let alone writing it.

     (I indented the above

                   because isn't that how

a poem is supposed to look?)

All it reminds me of is being

                   in  Mrs. Prestridge's 9th grade

                        (indent) (indent) (indent) poetry class

                                                       only

Because it was the only, only, only

                      class

                                open.

I had to stand in front of the

                    ENTIRE CLASS

      and recite a poem I didn't like

                           nor

                                                  understand.

     We used to joke

                                           (major indentation)                       that

"I'm not a poet, and I now it!"

      I'd rather write a story

                                                 or a book

where all the words stay on one

                                           line.

         THIS IS  RIDICULOUS

                  Thank you

                             The End.
